The franchise is making a switch into the realm of the fictional world of Auroa after spending almost 20 years with every game in a real-world setting and Ubisoft Paris wanted to make a living and breathing landscape
Lead Environment Artist & Art Technical Director Benoit Martinez told GameSpot:
“We built Auroa from the ground up. If there is a building, we asked ourselves, ‘What is its purpose?’
“We have breweries, wineries, and houses for everyone who lives and works here. We even thought about their commutes. The thinking was: if you follow any of our roads, you should end up somewhere.”
The popular shooter franchise has long staked its claim on gaming realism and authenticity, making sure to include crystal clear versions of actual places.
Auroa, however, is a fictional island in the Pacific Ocean, and the player will take the role of a special forces operative.
Ubisoft have been experts in world building for a while, with the creation of ‘Assassin’s Creed’, ‘Watch Dogs’, and even ‘Far Cry’.
However, the new ‘Ghost Recon’ title is a combination of familiarity in the series as well as something unknown due to the brand new setting.
The islands will have futuristic technologies, lagoons, tropical forests and the creative freedom to do almost anything, while the team has made sure to give gamers a reason to “care”.
“When you name something, you start to care about it. We want you to care about Auroa, so we named as much of it as we could.”
‘Ghost Recon Breakpoint’ is scheduled to be released on October 4 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
