The studio’s decision to make the next game in the franchise a VR title seems to have paid off, as sales for the hardware shot up following the huge announcement in November.
According to SuperData, 46,000 units were sold prior to the fourth quarter, but after the announcement the figure jumped up to 149,000.
This means 103,000 Valve Index headsets – which cost £919 – were sold between October and December, totally eclipsing the figures for the rest of 2019.
These numbers could have been even higher too, as almost every package of the headset was sold out worldwide by January 15.
On the official store page, those holding to buy an Index are instead greeted with an out-of-stock message which prompts customers to sign up for email notifications.
Meanwhile, Valve recently revealed the long-awaited title is “done”, despite some scepticism late last year when it was announced the game would launch on March 2020 – especially given the 12 year wait between franchise titles,
Asked about the possibility of “Valve Time kicking in”, the studio’s team responded in a Reddit AMA:
“With the exception of some tweaks to the absolute final scene, the game is done.
“Lots of us at Valve, as well as playtesters, have played through the entire game multiple times.
“Right now we’re primarily polishing and fixing bugs, which is where we’d hope to be at this point in the development cycle.
“We’re confident we’ll hit our intended release. (We let the Valve Time happen before we announced the game.)”
