Writer and director Neil Druckmann has opened up about Naughty Dog’s work on ‘The Last of Us Part II’ – which has seen big delays – and he acknowledged that some gamers will be disappointed after playing the highly anticipated follow-up.
He told Wired:
“Some of [the fans of the original game] are not going to like this game, and not like where it goes, and not like what it says or the fate of characters that they love.
“I’d rather have people passionately hate it than just be like, ‘Yeah, it was OK.’ “
However, Druckmann explained the goal for the team is for players to get so engrossed in the story – which can be bleak and heavy – that they can’t step away.
He added:
“We want you to try to empathise with that character, understand what they’re doing, and say, ‘OK, I’m going to role-play. I’m going to try to think the way this character thinks.’ “
Similarly, Joel actor Troy Baker has also revealed he expects the title to be divisive once it’s released.
He recently said the narrative should challenge user’s expectations of “what the game is, what the world is, who the characters are – everything”.
He continued:
“I don’t know whether people are going to like it or they’re going to hate it, but they definitely will NOT be ambivalent about it.”
