Players of the game can now play with up to four other people in a team with the last person standing crowned the winner.

Players can post “likes” to support their team members.

The new mode is part of an update which also includes “new button configuration options and new user emblems, as well as the option to redeem 30 in-game tickets for some of the elusive Special Themes that were featured during earlier events.”

In September, the free online multiplayer version of the classic tile-matching puzzle video game was released on Nintendo Switch as a cartridge, complete with the Big Block DLC.

Meanwhile, the creators of ‘Tetris’ previously credited the iconic game’s success to the Game Boy.

Alexey Pajitnov, the designer behind the popular title – which launched in 1984 – admitted that the handheld console proved to be the best way to play the title because it’s all one colour.

He said:

“‘Tetris’ was a good fit because it was a fun game that appealed to everyone, no matter your age, gender or culture.

“It wasn’t a game just aimed at kids, for instance, or limited because of the language you speak.

“Also, seeing the colors in ‘Tetris’ were not needed to play the game, which was a benefit given that the Game Boy was one colour.”

He added that ‘Tetris’ was appealing because it’s “visually attractive because of its use of geometry, and (it was) intellectually challenging. And it doesn’t hurt that the game has a peaceful, non-distractive style.”
